Harrison Pass Mining District

Now part of the Humbolt National Forest, the Star Tungsten Mine is no longer active. They mined primarily tungsten and beryllium but also molybdenite, beryl, and scheelite here in small quantities from 1929 to the 1970s. I am still learning about this area. Having passed through from the Ruby Marshes to Spring Creek over Harrison Pass many times, I have yet to explore the land in between.

I have noticed an increase in human damage from graffiti and bullet holes everywhere to just a lot of looting and careless-type damage. I’m hoping to return several times for future photo shots. The site is in an arrested decay but not much effort into preserving it.

If you go - be aware there is limited parking. Harrison Pass is not maintained in winter. It a base of fine dust and dirt, 4wd is recommended. It is very washboarded throughout and locals travel it fast. Parts are steep and narrow and folks venture through hauling large RVs and 5th wheels.

Photos are manipulated slightly with Capture One or Lightroom. I try not to stray too far from the original shot but sometimes will manipulate color. I also use RNI styles within Capture One to achieve looks once seen on film.
