A Unique Place in the Canyon

These are photos from a hike my son and I did in 2024. Shots were taken with a point and shoot Olympus camera and iphone. We had a very disconcerting incident happen while entering this area, as we had done many times. I feel I need to urge caution to hikers going through this camp as they do not take kindly to persons coming into the camp any longer. If you can, try getting around on the crude Forest Service trail.

Images taken with Olympus TG-6. Known as the fomer Boy Scout camp, now referred to as the Lion’s Camp or Right Fork in Lamoille Canyon.

Careful with private access

It had started off like any other day we hit a trail. This particular area my son and I had hiked many times. I had done my due dillegence, read stuff on Alltrails, books such as 50 Classic Hiikes in Nevada and stuff by Larry Hyslop. Much is described about the Right Fork Canyon but not the accessibility…which I have discovered is really unaccessibility.

What I have come to know is that the Lion’s Camp does not want hikers traipsing through to get to USFS lands. Technically the sign to actually enter such lands is a little less than a mile from the parking area outside the Lion’s Camp gates

Threatened

To make a long story short my son and I were aggressively confronted, threatened and told to leave. We skirted the property on a badly maintained Forest Service trail and subsequently met up with four other groups of hikers. We all exchanged stories of being threatened by the people that had adorned the Lion’s Camp that day. Some were angry, some were horrified and a bit scared. I have yet to return to the Right Fork canyon. The US Forest Service is doing a typical horrendous job of maintaining anything in Lamoille Canyon and after our experience we are sketchy about going back to this area.
